A Shinto shrine that is said to have been the birthplace of the city of Aomori. The landscape is dotted with sites that tell the history of the area, such as the Benzaiten Shrine constructed in 1641. The beautiful works of the Aomori-born printmaker Shiko Munakata are another of this historic shrine’s charms.

For some 80 years beginning in 1908, the Seikan Ferry connected the ports of Aomori and Hakodate, greatly contributing to the Japanese economy. One of the few ships in the world that could carry train cars, it is now on display for you to see just as it was when it first entered commission.

This largest of Japan’s ancient archeological sites was once a village occupied by Jomon people some 5,500 to 4,000 years ago. In July 2021, the 17 archaeological sites in Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, and Akita were registered as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site under the title “Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan.” The site is now a massive park that you can freely walk around and enjoy.
